Second Annual iCARE Chili Cookoff Raises $3,000 for Military Families

The Village of Colonie Family Recreation Center brought together more than 500 South Colonie faculty, staff and families Jan. 22 to enjoy iCARE’s second annual Firehouse Chili Cookoff.

Nine organizations participated and 11 different chili dishes were available for sampling. SEPTA secured a number of vendors and several Colonie Central High School clubs were in representation fundraising and showcasing their talents.

In the end, Midway Fire Department edged out the Village of Colonie Senior Citizens Center to win the title of iCARE’s 2016 Chili Cook-off Champion. The other award newly added this year: “The People’s Choice Award” was decided by public ballot and went to Stanford Heights Fire Department.

The event raised nearly $3,000. As has been and will be the case all year, iCARE will donate fundraising proceeds to Blue Star Mothers and Soldier On in support of the men and women, both past and present, of our U.S. Military.

Many thanks are in order to the participating organizations: Midway, Stanford Heights, West Albany, Fuller Road, Verdoy, Menands, Colonie Village Senior Center and the U.S. Army.

Many thanks also to the judges who participated and donated their time and tasting skills: Superintendent Mr. Jonathan Buhner, Colonie Board President David Kiehle, NYS Assemblyman Phil Steck, Sheriff Craig Apple, Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan, President of the Colonie Chamber of Commerce Tom Nolte and Colonie Mayor Frank Leak (Thank you also to Mayor Leak for donating use of the Village Recreation Center). A special thank you Coach Joe Repko for donating his 50/50 winnings of $200 back to iCARE.
