During the 2008-2009 school year, Sand Creek Middle School began implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
This nationally recognized program is based on the work of Dr. Dan Olweus, a researcher from Norway who first recognized the impact of bullying on student achievement. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is designed to prevent or reduce bullying in schools to ensure that students are in a safe environment where learning can occur.
The OBPP is designed to address incidents of bullying at the school-wide, classroom, individual and community levels. As we worked to develop our program at Sand Creek Middle School, we began by administering a survey to our students to determine where incidents of bullying were occurring most frequently. With that information in mind, the staff worked to ensure that our supervision of those areas increased and worked to develop an educational component that addresses the motivation behind bullying behaviors and attempts to teach students better strategies for interacting with all of the members of our community.
The members of Sand Creek Middle School’s Anti-Bullying Committee also adopted and shared with staff and students the four anti-bullying rules:
We will not bully others
We will try to help students who are bullied
We will try to include students who are left out
If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home
In order to introduce the new program to the staff and students, the committee and the PTA sponsored Creekfest 2008 which began with a carnival that included members from our community and culminated with a building-wide event during school the next day at which our anti-bullying slogan was introduced and our staff and students learned the bullying rules and how we expected the members of our community to treat one another at Sand Creek Middle School.
This exciting kick-off event continues today and has played a critical role in the positive changes we have observed at the building each school year. We look forward to continuing to work with our PTA, staff and students to expand our Bullying Prevention Program and strengthen our community at Sand Creek Middle School.
