Hall of Fame

Block CThe Colonie Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2019 to recognize graduates, staff/faculty, and community members who have achieved significant accomplishments and will provide current students with positive role models in their own lives. Each spring, the Board of Education Athletics Hall of Fame Committee seeks nominations for induction into the Colonie Central High School Athletics Hall of Fame in the categories below.

Marco Tomaso - Coach

Marco Tomaso earned his BS in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland in 1966 and began a 34-year career teaching and coaching in South Colonie. He coached football, track, and golf, but focused on wrestling and lacrosse. Marco spent 20 years as head varsity wrestling coach and helped found Section 2 lacrosse, serving as varsity coach for 20 years. After retiring in 2000, he became a respected lacrosse referee, inducted into the Colonie Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Empire North Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2019.

Wendy Kelley, Coach

Wendy Kelley began teaching Physical Education at South Colonie in 1993 and continues at Lisha Kill Middle School. Over her career, she has coached four sports, often three in a year. Her highlight was as an assistant coach for Colonie Girls Basketball, helping establish it as a top program. The 2000 and 2001 teams won consecutive Section II crowns and the NYS Championship. After coaching, Wendy contributed to the NYSPHSAA girls basketball championships for 10 years.

Jennifer (Kramer) Mortimer, 2000

Jennifer(Kramer) Mortimer , a 2000 graduate of Colonie Central High School, excelled in cross country and track, scoring in the New York State Championships nine times, including four State Champion titles. She helped rank her team third nationally in 1999. Currently, she holds six track records and is part of four record-holding relay teams. At Boston College, she was a scoring member of the team that placed fourth in the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships. In her senior year, she earned NCAA All-American status and set the school record in the 5000m, qualifying for the 2004 US Olympic Trials. Now, she works in the running industry with her husband, John, at Millennium Running in New Hampshire.

Tehresa (Coles) Massena, 2011

Tehresa graduated from Siena College in 2015 with both a bachelor's and master's degree in Accounting. Her impressive accomplishments include being a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, a two-time Player of the Week, and the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015. She was also a candidate for the NCAA Woman of the Year and set career records for 308 steals, 98 steals in a season, and 1,199 points scored. Additionally, she ranked #16 in scoring, #23 in rebounding, and #20 in assists at Siena. Before her collegiate success, Tehresa excelled at Colonie Central High School, where she lettered in Track and Field, Volleyball, Soccer, and Basketball, scoring 1,046 career points. She earned numerous honors, including being named a Suburban Council First Team All-Star and a Times Union First Team All-Area selection.

Joe Trimarchi, 1994

Joe Trimarchi, a 1994 Colonie Central High School graduate, was a three-year Varsity basketball starter and the team’s leading scorer. In his senior year, he led the Garnet Raiders to an 18-3 record and a Suburban Council Championship, earning multiple Player of the Year honors. He continued at Quinnipiac University, becoming the all-time 3-point leader and a 1,000+ point scorer. Now active in the community, Trimarchi coaches local players and supports athletes through his physical therapy practice. He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.

1962 Boys Cross Country Team

In the fall of 1962, Colonie’s Varsity Cross-Country team, coached by Ed Springstead, faced a challenging race schedule. Early highlights included a 2nd place at the Grout Run, 3rd at the St. John’s Invitational, and 5th at the E.J. Herrmann Invitational. The team’s remarkable streak began with a 1st place finish at the Suburban Council Championship on 10/9, followed by victories at the Capital District Meet and the Class A, Section II Championship. As Section II Champions, they competed in the NYS Intersectional Meet on November 10, 1962, where they placed 1st, making history as Colonie's first State Championship-winning running team. The team included Bill Haas, Bill Mathews, Jake Haas, Ed Green, Paul Schmidt, Peter Schmidt, and Ray Van Epps.

Tony Rossi, Contributor

At Colonie, Rossi was a 3-sport athlete in baseball, basketball, and football, with a passion for baseball. He led the freshmen team with a .375 batting average, the JV with .477, and the Varsity with .388 and .431 in his junior and senior years. After graduating from Brockport State, he taught Mathematics in Guilderland for 34 years while coaching at Siena College for 57 years. Rossi is the winningest coach in both Siena College and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history, finishing his 54th season with 936 career victories. He also tied for second all-time in NCAA Baseball history for seasons coached and had the highest batting average (.477) in the East in 1964.

Ken Strube, Contributor

Ken, a 1975 Ithaca College graduate, began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Colonie under Hall of Fame coaches Jim Sheehan and Harold “Pep” Sand. He holds the record for most career wins in Section 2 history (588). His Shenendehowa teams won 23 Suburban Council Championships, 10 Section 2 Championships, 9 State Regional Championships, and 4 NYSPHSAA State Championships. Ken served 17 years as Suburban Council Chairman and on Section 2’s Girls Basketball Committee. He earned numerous “Coach of the Year” honors and was named the 2008 District 2-Northeast Region “National Coach of the Year” by the WBCA. Ken is inducted into several halls of fame, including the Shenendehowa Athletic Hall of Fame and the Colonie Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a co-captain of the 1971 Boys Basketball Team.
