South Colonie Board of Education Approves Bids; Stage 1 Construction Underway

On Tuesday, June 4, the South Colonie Board of Education approved bids for the first portion of Stage 1 of the district’s extensive capital project, initiating construction at several schools. This portion’s highlights include extensive site work and classroom renovations at Shaker Road Elementary, Team Rooms, Locker Rooms, Classrooms, and Fitness Center renovations at Colonie Central High School, ADA site work at Forest Park, and a new stormwater management system at Sand Creek Middle School. The approval for Lisha Kill’s bids, focusing on the facade and auditorium work is anticipated at the upcoming June 25 meeting.

“This approval marks significant progress in the district's $120 million capital project, which voters sanctioned in October 2022,” said Assistant Superintendent for Management Services and Strategic Planning Jacqlene McAllister. “Just last month, the district commenced construction on the new turf field and athletic complex, signaling the project's official launch. With work beginning at Colonie High, we can’t help but be excited for the work to come for the next generation of South Colonie students.”

Construction and Safety Updates for Students and Community Members

As the project progresses, the high school’s new turf field construction has necessitated the closure of the track and Ambrosio Field complex. For the safety of all, these areas are currently off-limits.

To ensure safe passage for walkers traveling from Roessleville to the high school, a designated pathway has been established. Community members are urged to use this pathway and avoid construction zones to protect both themselves and the workers on-site.

Impact on High School Facilities

Construction on high school classrooms and the Multi-Use Gym (MUG) is set to begin at the end of the school year. Consequently, certain areas will be closed off, and parking availability will be restricted. Visitors and students are advised to adhere to posted signs and avoid restricted areas.

Additional Site Work

Shaker Road Elementary School: Construction of a new bus loop and parking lot will begin at the end of June. The entire campus, including playgrounds, will be closed for the summer. Families are encouraged to visit the new playgrounds available at other elementary schools within the district.

Sand Creek Middle School: The parking lot and sidewalks are scheduled for resurfacing in August as part of regular maintenance. Furthermore, stormwater management work will be carried out near the tennis courts under the Next Generation Capital project, potentially limiting parking access throughout the summer.

The South Colonie School District appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as they work diligently to enhance the educational facilities.
