Lisha Kill School community rallies to support beloved teacher Kathy Bianchi

On Thursday, May 30, the Lisha Kill School Community came together in a touching display of solidarity and affection for Kathy Bianchi, a cherished former South Colonie employee battling ovarian cancer. After 33 years of dedicated service, Bianchi retired at the end of last year, prioritizing her students and families even in the face of her illness.

The decision to retire was not easy for Bianchi, who has been a beacon of hope and inspiration at Lisha Kill Middle School, where she taught sixth-grade math and science. She stepped down to ensure her health struggles wouldn’t impact her students, exemplifying the selflessness she has shown throughout her career.

Earlier this week plans to visit Bianchi at her home were altered due to her health condition. Instead, the school community swiftly organized to create a heartfelt video message filled with love and support. The video, featuring an 80s lip dub from students, teachers, and staff, was a colorful and energetic testament to the profound impact Bianchi has had on countless lives. Participants sang, danced, and cheered in teal tutus (Bianchi’s favorite color), holding hundreds of signs that expressed their love and gratitude for Bianchi.

“Kathy Bianchi is not just a colleague; she is family to the Lisha Kill School Community,” said principal Jill Penn.  “For more than  thirty years, she gave her heart and soul to our school, and today, we want to give a little bit of that back to her.”

The initiative was reminiscent of the recognition Bianchi received in November 2022 as part of the “Meet the Pack” series, introduced by Dr. David Perry, Superintendent of Schools. This series, which began with Kathy, went on to highlight exceptional South Colonie staff members. Bianchi was the first honoree, celebrated for her professional impact and unwavering dedication to students and families.

When the series was announced, Dr. Perry emphasized its purpose: "We want our employees to understand the impact that they have on our students and families. Kathy Bianchi’s work is a perfect example of this. She has made a significant difference in the lives of those she touches every day."

During the November 1, 2022 Board Meeting, Bianchi was visibly moved as she watched the video tribute, reflecting on her favorite part of teaching: “Seeing what they can accomplish in a year. They come to me as children and they leave as young adults. To see the growth, not just academically but emotionally as well, it makes my heart melt.”

Bianchi’s passion for digital learning resources significantly benefited the district, making South Colonie educators well-prepared for virtual teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her commitment to ensuring every family had the necessary resources was a driving force in her career.

Beyond the classroom, Bianchi’s warmth and generosity extended to her colleagues and community. She was known for her delicious meals, summer pool parties, and enthusiasm for roller-skating and pickleball. Her multifaceted contributions earned her a nomination for The Walmart Corporation Teacher of the Year Award by a grateful parent.

As the community gathered to create the video message for Bianchi, stories and expressions of gratitude flowed freely. The community’s rallying support on May 30 was a powerful reminder of the deep connections she has forged and the lasting impact of her work.
