Colonie Central High School honored with NYSPHSAA School of Excellence Award
Colonie Central High School has recently been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) with the School of Excellence Award for the 2023-2024 school year. This honor is awarded to schools where 75% of varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.
This year, 226 schools across New York State achieved the School of Excellence status, an increase from the 219 schools honored in the previous school year. The School of Excellence Award, established in the 2016-17 school year, acknowledges the commitment of student-athletes to academic excellence alongside their athletic pursuits.
Dr. Robert Zayas, Executive Director of NYSPHSAA, highlighted the significance of academic achievement for student-athletes, stating, “The efforts made by student-athletes in the classroom are paramount to their success in the athletic arena, and beyond their high school days. We are proud of those who put in the work as ‘student’ and ‘athlete’, as well as the growth in both School of Excellence and Distinction recognition.”
The commemorative awards for the School of Excellence winners will be presented at the local athletic director workshop this fall.
“Colonie High School's achievement in earning the School of Excellence Award underscores the dedication of its student-athletes, coaches, and staff,” said South Colonie Athletic Director Bill Roemer. “This recognition not only celebrates their hard work and commitment to excellence but also highlights the collective effort and support of the entire school community in fostering academic success among our athletes.”
