South Colonie’s Multicultural Festival returns April 4
South Colonie announced this week the return of the Multicultural Festival, an event dedicated to celebrating the vibrant diversity within the Colonie community. After a year-long pause, this tradition is back offering an unforgettable evening of cultural discovery, connection, and celebration.
What began over a decade ago as intimate potlucks for ENL families at Sand Creek has grown into a districtwide celebration that unites students, families, and staff from all backgrounds. The first official festival took place in Sand Creek’s cafeteria in 2017, and by 2019, the event moved to the high school’s multi-use gymnasium to accommodate its growing popularity.
“This year’s festival will continue to celebrate the unique cultures that enrich our school community through food, music, performances, and interactive displays,” said DEI Coordinator and ENL teacher April Mlambi. “It’s a powerful opportunity to learn more about diverse cultures of our neighbors and friends while celebrating the unity that brings us together.”
New this year, 3rd and 4th grade students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops led by local artist Zorkie Nelson, focusing on the fundamentals of West African drumming and dance. These lessons, held in the weeks leading up to the festival, will culminate in live student performances at the event.
“Zorkie’s workshops offer students more than just artistic skills—they provide a window into West African culture, showcasing its joy, authenticity, and lasting influence on music and the arts,” said Mlambi.
The festival’s growth and success reflect the dedication and enthusiasm of South Colonie students, families, and staff.
“Watching students proudly share their cultural heritage and engage with others’ traditions is truly inspiring,” added Mlambi. “We are deeply grateful for the support of district leadership and the many volunteers who help make this event possible.”
Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., and join us at the Colonie Central High School gymnasium for an unforgettable evening celebrating the rich diversity of our community.
