Today, the South Colonie Central School District commemorated its 75th Anniversary with a special cake cutting ceremony, marking 75 years since the merger of several Colonie school communities.
In 1949, voters endorsed the historic merger with a decisive vote of 1083 to 680, unifying West Albany, Roessleville, Colonie Village, Maywood, Karner, and Shaker Road schools under the banner of Colonie Central School District #1. To honor this milestone, a celebratory cake cutting event was held, allowing attendees to reflect on the collective journey that has shaped the district’s identity over the past seven and a half decades.
The festivities commenced at South Colonie’s district office, where guests including district leadership, board members, and notable local elected officials such as Senator Jake Ashby, Assemblymember Phil Steck, Town of Colonie Supervisor Peter Crummey, Village of Colonie Mayor Tom Tobin, and Albany County Legislator Frank Mauriello gathered to partake in the ceremony. These individuals presented proclamations honoring the district’s 75th Anniversary milestone.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate this significant milestone in our district’s history,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perry. “The 75th Anniversary not only honors our past but also symbolizes our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional education and fostering a sense of community within South Colonie. We look forward to continuing to serve our students and families for many more years to come.”
In addition to the ceremonial cake cutting, Saddlewood Elementary School organized a drive-in movie experience for students, transporting them back in time. South Colonie’s food service department also contributed to the birthday festivities by offering a special sweet treat for students during lunch.
The South Colonie Central School District is extending its celebration of 75 years throughout the school year and will culminate its festivities at Raiderfest in May. More information will be forthcoming.
