CCHS Student Athletes shatter longstanding record at 58th Harry Koch Colonie Relays

Ryan Buskey took top honors with 6’8”, followed by Nick Malette with a personal best of 6’4” and Camryn Curet took 4th also with a 6’4”.

Last weekend, three CCHS student-athletes made history at the 58th Harry Koch Colonie Relays by breaking a high jump record that stood for 46 years. Nick Malette, Cam Curet, and Ryan Buskey achieved a combined jump of 19 feet 4 inches, surpassing the previous record set in 1978 by Stephan Davis, Gary Strait, and John Miller. A few members of the ‘78 high jump team were on location to witness this momentous event, bringing this achievement full circle for all involved.

"I feel great, you know? Knowing that every day I just get better and better, and even if I don’t PR at a meet it’s still a pretty good jump so… it just feels great," says Curet, speaking on his personal record of 6 feet 7 inches coming into this season – a PR that has been met with exponential growth – in an interview with MileSplit NY.

When the group was asked about what motivates them to continue to push for their goals, Buskey, the top performer of the day with a meet winning jump of 6 feet 8 inches and a season best of 6 feet 9 inches speaks up, "I gotta work harder every day, working on my form, working on my approach, and I gotta trust my coaches… and these two guys (Nick and Cam) push me everyday."

Each of the athletes expressed their intention to continue to improve before the end of the season, insisting that they have more to give, thanks to the fact that they have each other as their biggest motivators. "I just don’t want to fall behind my teammates. They're so great and I gotta keep up if I want to be good," added Malette. The three exchange knowing looks when discussing their plans to further their success.

Their achievement at the Colonie Relays is not just a testament to their dedication and talent but also a tribute to the enduring legacy of our district’s athletic program. Events like these bridge the gap between past and present, celebrating both the history and the future of our schools and students. As we honor our 75th anniversary, stories of success and teamwork from past and present remind us of the strong traditions and bright future that define our community.
