South Colonie educators honored with Broadview award for Charlie’s Playground

This month, South Colonie educators Sarah Norton and Courtney Aperance were awarded the prestigious Broadview Award for their extraordinary efforts in creating a lasting legacy for a beloved student.

Charlie’s Playground is a remarkable initiative designed to honor the memory of former Saddlewood Elementary student, Charlie Fernandez, who tragically lost her battle with neuroblastoma in April 2021. This all-abilities playground is dedicated to creating an inclusive space for children of all abilities, with a particular focus on accommodating those with visual impairments.

Norton and Aperance led the volunteer outreach and fundraising efforts, leveraging their connections within the school district to garner widespread support. Their dedication and passion for the project led them to collaborate with the foundation Where Angels Play, known for constructing playgrounds that celebrate the lives of children who have passed away.

Remarkably, the playground in Charlie's memory set a record as the fastest assembled project by Where Angels Play. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on June 17, 2023, marking a significant moment of celebration and remembrance as we near the first anniversary of the build.

Courtney reflected on the impact of their efforts, stating, “The greatest legacy one can leave is positively impacting the lives of others. Pay it forward. Without even knowing, Charlie did just that in her few short years.”

Norton and Aperance’s selfless actions embody the essence of Broadview’s philosophy of people helping people. Their dedication ensured the success of this heartfelt project, which has provided joy and play opportunities for children of all abilities for years to come. The Broadview Award recognizes their exceptional contributions and honors their commitment to making a positive difference in their community.

"We are incredibly proud of Sarah Norton and Courtney Aperance for their unwavering dedication and compassionate efforts in creating Charlie’s Playground.” said Dr. David Perry Superintendent of Schools  “This award is a testament to their extraordinary commitment to our students and community. Their work not only honors Charlie’s memory but also provides an inclusive and joyful space for children of all abilities to play and grow.”

Norton and Aperance will officially be recognized at a dinner reception in Fall.
