In my field hockey era: Colonie brings new team to the Fall sports lineup
On the first day of school, excitement filled the air as students stepped off the bus, many carrying an unexpected addition alongside their backpacks—field hockey sticks. For the first time in over 50 years, the return of the field hockey team signified more than just a new athletic program; it was a symbol of fresh beginnings and new opportunities for Colonie students.
With its first team in over 50 years, Colonie is joining the ranks of other schools in the region offering field hockey, a sport known for its fast pace, team camaraderie, and unique combination of strategy and skill. The addition of field hockey to the fall sports lineup reflects a growing interest in the sport among high school athletes across the state. It also aligns with the district’s larger goals of encouraging new opportunities for students to get involved in athletics, build teamwork, and take pride in representing the Wolf Pack.
“We’re excited to add field hockey to our sport offerings,” said Bill Roemer Colonie's Athletic Director. “There’s been a strong push from students and families to bring this sport here, and it’s a great way to introduce something fresh while continuing to promote our pack pride.”
Growing Interest
The decision to add field hockey wasn’t made lightly. Over the past few years, student interest in the sport has steadily increased, with many voicing their desire for a team that reflects the growing popularity of field hockey across the state. From local programs like ADK and Stampede to summer camps, the passion for the game became undeniable, prompting the district to place it in the official fall lineup.
“Field hockey offers something different,” says Coach Kelly Barkevich, who will be leading the new team. “It’s a mix of skill, speed, and endurance, and I think a lot of students were drawn to that challenge. We’re excited to get started and build something really special from the ground up.”
Building the Foundation
As Colonie’s field hockey team begins its inaugural season, the focus will be on developing fundamental skills and fostering team cohesion. Many players are new to the sport, but the excitement and commitment to learning are palpable.
“Starting a team is all about laying the groundwork,” Barkevich explained. “This year, we’re focused on growth—helping players understand the game, build their skills, and most importantly, enjoy the experience. Winning will come with time, but for now, it’s about creating a strong foundation. We have been so excited about our turnout this season and are happy so many of our district’s talented student-athletes took a chance on a new sport.”
Pack Pride Meets Field Hockey
Colonie’s field hockey team is expected to bring the same level of pride that the school’s other sports teams are known for, reinforcing the idea that every athlete—no matter the sport—belongs to a united community. The “Run with the Pack” campaign will extend to the field hockey team as they embark on their debut season.
As the Colonie Wolf Pack begins this new program, the field hockey team is poised to become an integral part of the school’s athletic community, offering students fresh opportunities to excel both on and off the field. Their first game, played on the first day of the 2024-25 school year against Burnt Hills, marked a historic moment for Colonie athletics as the school fielded its first field hockey team in over 50 years. Congratulations to CCHS freshman Ari Fowles, who made history by scoring the first goal for Colonie in this new era of the sport!
“Our field hockey team is part of something much bigger than just a new team at our school,” says Fowles. “It’s about representing Colonie, showing our school spirit, and making history as the first players to wear the jersey.”
