CCHS post-graduate program partners with CrossFit for student wellness
Colonie Central High School’s post-graduate program is going above and beyond to equip students with essential life skills for their future. As part of the program's focus on overall well-being, students have begun participating in weekly CrossFit training sessions with the local gym, CrossFit For The People (CFTP). The initiative is designed to promote physical and mental wellness while fostering community connections.
Led by special education teacher Aimee Bain, the program supports students who have already completed their high school graduation requirements but remain enrolled to further develop their independent living and vocational skills. A key component of this year’s efforts includes the partnership with CFTP- where students engage in strength, balance and endurance exercises tailored to their abilities.
“One idea I have always tried to instill into my classroom is the importance of finding peace within one's body. Over the years I have introduced meditation, breathing exercises, and various other grounding techniques,” said Bain. “My hope with this initiative is that we can continue to build upon these skills in a new and exciting way, while also getting students involved with their community.”
Each week, students participate in a private CrossFit session led by CFTP owner Kayla Anderton, who provides a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants. By introducing these activities now, the program aims to create lasting connections that will continue to benefit students after they leave the school. “The connections that our students will make through this initiative will set them up for a community-oriented future, giving them contacts that can help them maintain the level of fitness and mobility they have built up throughout their educational careers,” Bain added.
With initiatives like this, the district's post-graduate program hopes to empower students to live healthier, more independent lives by integrating physical wellness and community engagement into their routines. The partnership between the school and CFTP serves as a vital step toward that goal.
