Revving up a bright future: Colonie student gains experience for a career in diesel tech
Colonie Central High School senior Vincent DeMare has a clear vision for his future, and thanks to the hands-on experience and training he's received in the Diesel Technology program at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center, he’s ready to make it a reality.
DeMare, who plans to enter the military after graduation, already possesses critical skills in auto and truck repair. "I have already qualified for auto and truck repair," he shared. "When I am done [with the military], I want to go to work for National Grid repairing trucks."
DeMare was recently among 500 Capital Region BOCES students who toured the National Grid headquarters in Schenectady, exploring potential career paths, including fleet maintenance. Inspired by his family’s background in industry, he said, “I just love this kind of work.”
As one of 40 students enrolled in the Diesel Tech program this year, DeMare is part of a group gaining hands-on expertise in automotive, bus, truck, and heavy equipment repair. Located at the Career and Technical Education Center in Albany, this two-year program equips students with the skills necessary for a range of careers in the diesel and automotive fields. Many graduates enter the workforce directly, while others pursue additional education to further their expertise.
