Sarah Norton honored with Broadview Education grant for life skills initiative
Lisha Kill life skills teacher, Sarah Norton, has been selected as one of 20 recipients of the Broadview Education Grant, recognizing educators who are making a meaningful difference in their classrooms. Norton's Coffee and Sunshine Cart initiative was a creative, student-run project aimed at helping students develop important life skills, showcasing her commitment to empowering them.
The Coffee and Sunshine Cart engages students in a wide range of real world activities. From mastering barista techniques, to managing finances and inventory, students are working to continue developing professional and social skills with guidance from instructors. The project also emphasizes the importance of giving back: students work together to select a local charity each month to receive the cart’s proceeds. Since its debut, the cart has raised over $1,000 for causes such as Meghan’s Mission, the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk, and local families in need.
“With the grant funds, Mrs. Norton plans to enhance the cart’s operations, ensuring even greater opportunities for her students to learn and grow,” said Principal Jill Penn. “Her work reflects a commitment to preparing students for life beyond the classroom while fostering a spirit of community and generosity. Congratulations, Mrs. Norton, on this well-deserved recognition!”
