Warm hearts, helping hands: The spirit of giving across our district
Throughout November and December, schools across the district have embraced the spirit of giving by collecting food, clothing, winter coats, gloves, and other essentials to support families in our community. Each building contributes in its own special way, with initiatives ranging from "hat and mitten trees" in school lobbies, to canned food or winter coat drives. Donations will benefit local organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, and the Regional Food Bank, with some items kept within the schools to assist current students.
These annual traditions highlight the district's commitment to fostering a culture of kindness and generosity for students and families who call Colonie their home.
"The efforts of our students, staff, and families during this season of giving highlight the strong connections within our district and community," said Dr. David Perry, superintendent of schools. "It's truly inspiring to witness how we consistently unite to support one another and extend our impact to the broader community, making a meaningful difference."
The district’s holiday drives not only address immediate needs but also instill important values in students. Learning to give back teaches children the effects of showing empathy, the responsibility we all have to one another, and the power of collective action. By participating in these efforts, students gain a deeper appreciation for their role in building a supportive and connected community, and see firsthand the sphere of influence their hard work has on the lives of their neighbors.
While each building’s approach is unique, the shared mission of helping others reminds us of the strength we find in coming together. Our schools remain proud to be a part of this community, and would like to extend a thank you for the community’s unwavering generosity in supporting initiatives such as these throughout the years. Let’s continue to work together to ensure South Colonie remains a safe and happy place to call home.
