Colonie senior forges path to success at Capital Region BOCES
For Colonie Central High School senior Austin Lafountain, education has always been about hands-on learning and creativity. Traditional classroom settings didn’t quite fit his style, and when thinking about his future, he knew he wanted a career that would keep him active and engaged.
That’s why Austin enrolled in the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Welding and Metal Fabrication program at the start of his junior year.
“I learn better when I’m doing something and working with my hands,” Lafountain said. “An office job isn’t for me. I just couldn’t do it. I need to be active, and I’ve always had a passion for welding, so this is the career for me.”
At BOCES, Lafountain is one of 90 students across the Albany and Schoharie campuses participating in the two-year program. The program teaches industry standards set by the American Welding Society and helps students earn certifications that prepare them for careers in the welding industry.
“The program has been a perfect fit for me. It’s giving me the skills and experience I need to take the next steps in my career,” he added.
After graduating this spring, Lafountain plans to continue his education at SUNY Delhi, focusing on welding to deepen his knowledge and expertise. From there, he hopes to pursue a career as a pipe welder or boilermaker, combining his passion for welding with a dynamic, hands-on profession.
Programs like the one Lafountain is part of are tailored to help students discover their passions, build real-world skills, and prepare for success—whether that means entering the workforce or continuing their education.
For Austin Lafountain, BOCES has been more than a program; it’s been a launchpad for a bright and active future.
