South Colonie students crunch numbers like pros at Mathcounts Competition

On Saturday, Feb. 1, nine talented South Colonie students showcased their mathematical mastery at the 38th Annual Mathcounts Competition, hosted by the Capital District Chapter of the National Mathcounts Foundation. Held at the GE Global Research Facility in Niskayuna, the event brought together more than 100 of the region’s brightest middle school math students for a day of challenging problems, hands-on learning, and of course friendly competition.
Lisha Kill Middle School, coached by Ms. DeSalvatore and Ms. Frank was represented by 8th graders Nathan Sacks, Patrick McAllister, Elijah Montijo, Easton Hunsaker, and Anthony Musto, 7th grader David Ighodaro, and 6th grader Zachary Goldman.
Sand Creek Middle School, under the guidance of Ms. Graber was represented by 8th graders Cullen McNeal and Quinn McNeal. The dedication and support of these educators played a crucial role in preparing the students for this rigorous competition, helping them develop problem-solving skills and confidence in their mathematical abilities.
Beyond the competition, students had an exciting opportunity to hear from Peter Tu, GE Aerospace's Chief AI Scientist, who introduced them to cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology. One of the highlights of the day was Tu’s demonstration of an AI-powered robotic dog, which sparked their curiosity about the real-world applications of math and AI.
“We are incredibly proud of all the students who represented South Colonie at this year’s Mathcounts Competition,” said Gregory Bearup, STEAM supervisor. “Their hard work and passion for mathematics were on full display. Not only did they challenge themselves academically, but they also had the chance to see firsthand how math and AI intersect in the real world. A special thanks also goes to our dedicated teachers, Ms. DeSalvatore, Ms. Frank, and Ms. Graber, for their unwavering commitment to our students’ success. We’re already looking forward to next year’s competition!”
The Mathcounts Competition is a highlight of the academic year for many middle school students, offering a platform to apply their math skills in a fun and competitive environment. For the South Colonie participants, the event was not only a chance to test their abilities but also an opportunity to represent their schools and district with pride.
Congratulations to all the students, coaches, and families involved in this year’s competition. The South Colonie community looks forward to seeing even more achievements in the years to come!
