The South Colonie Central School District will hold elections for one seat on the Board of Education in May 2025. The election will take place on Tuesday, May 20 and the winner will serve a five-year term that will expire on June 30, 2030 to succeed Brian Casey.

The South Colonie Board of Education consists of nine volunteer members who are elected by the community to oversee the district’s educational policies and practices. Board members take on one of the most crucial roles in shaping public education and ensuring that schools are responsive to the needs of the community. Each member serves a five-year term, and elections are held annually for various positions.

Open vacancy

The current Board vacancy is for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2025, and expiring June 30, 2030. 

Petitions for board candidacy

Candidates interested in running for the Board of Education must submit a petition. Petitions are available to qualified district residents at the District Office, located at 102 Loralee Drive, Albany, NY. Petitions may be picked up during regular office hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment, please contact the District Clerk at 869-3576, ext. 0442.

Each petition must include:

• A minimum of 26 signatures from qualified voters in the district.
• The name and residence of the candidate.
• A description of the vacancy being filled, including the length of the term and the name of the current incumbent.

Deadline for petition submission

Petitions are due by Monday, April 21, 2025, at 4:00 p.m.

Lottery for ballot position

A lottery will be held to determine the order of candidates on the ballot. This lottery will take place in-person on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. Candidates unable to attend may designate a representative in writing to participate on their behalf, or the District Clerk will act as a proxy.
