Bringing History to Life: Colonie Students Learn from Firsthand Account of Armenian Genocide

On Friday, March 21, 2025, Colonie Central High School welcomed Antranig Karageozian for a powerful and educational presentation on the Armenian Genocide. Accompanied by his niece, Lilly Karageozian, a 2023 Colonie High School graduate, Mr. Karageozian captivated students with a compelling blend of historical insight and personal narrative, shedding light on a tragic yet often overlooked chapter of history.
Students from Mr. John Verra’s Global 10 Social Studies classes gained a deeper understanding of the Armenian Genocide, in which 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the early 20th century, while also exploring its ongoing impact through the modern conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Mrs. Susan Vatalaro’s English 9 and 9 Honors classes, having recently studied Night by Elie Wiesel and Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, drew striking parallels of the atrocities committed.
Mr. Karageozian’s recounting of his grandmother’s loss during the genocide added a deeply personal element to the discussion, making history come alive for the students.
“The presentation by Mr. Karageozian was a transformative experience for my Global 10 students,” said Verra. “It bridged the gap between textbook history and lived reality, giving them a deeper appreciation for the Armenian Genocide and its relevance today. Hearing about his grandmother’s story made it personal—it’s a lesson they won’t soon forget.”
This event reinforced the district’s commitment to fostering global awareness and empathy among students. By connecting historical events to contemporary issues and human stories, the presentation illuminated the lasting significance of the Armenian Genocide, leaving a lasting impact on those who attended.
