James Vardaro to Be Appointed as Principal of Veeder Elementary School

On April 23, the South Colonie Board of Education is set to officially appoint James Vardaro as the new Principal of Veeder Elementary School, effective July 1. With nearly two decades of service to the South Colonie community and extensive leadership experience, Vardaro is well prepared to take on this important role.
Vardaro has served as associate principal at Sand Creek Middle School since 2018, where he has overseen daily operations for a building of more than 880 students and 170 staff members. He played a pivotal role in the development of a comprehensive character education and recognition program, fostered shared decision-making practices across teams, and led initiatives to support student transitions between grade levels, including collaboration with elementary schools to assist fourth graders transitioning to middle school.
Prior to his administrative role, Vardaro served as an English teacher at Colonie Central High School, instructing students in grades 8-12 and preparing them for Regents and College Board examinations. His passion for literacy and language instruction is reflected in his academic background and instructional leadership.
“I am honored by the opportunity to serve as the next principal of Veeder Elementary School,” said Vardaro. “Throughout my career, I’ve been committed to building strong relationships, fostering collaborative decision-making, and supporting the growth of every child. I look forward to leading with empathy, purpose, and a shared vision for student success.”
"James is not only a compassionate and seasoned leader but also someone deeply rooted in our South Colonie community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perry. “His extensive experience within our district has given him an intimate understanding of the unique needs of our students and staff. I am confident that his leadership will not only uphold but also enhance the strong legacy at Veeder Elementary, fostering an environment where every student can thrive."
Vardaro will succeed Principal Nora Sullivan, who will retire on June 30 after 39 years of dedicated service to the South Colonie community. The district extends its deepest gratitude to Principal Sullivan for her years of unwavering commitment and impact on students, staff, and families
Vardaro holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Leadership from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, a Master of Science in Education from Kaplan University with a focus on Literacy and Language Instruction, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary/Special Education from LeMoyne College.
Please join us in congratulating Mr. Vardaro on his new role and in celebrating Mrs. Sullivan’s retirement and years of service to South Colonie.
