Elementary Students Hatch Curiosity!

Over the last three weeks, elementary students across South Colonie elementary schools have had a front-row seat to one of the most exciting science experiences of the year — chick hatching!
As part of this hands-on learning experience, students closely observed the stages of development from egg to fluffy chick. They monitored incubators, tracked progress through journals and classroom discussions, and ultimately witnessed the transformation from egg to chick. The activity not only brings science to life, but also instills important lessons in patience, care, and responsibility.
The annual project has become a beloved tradition in the district’s elementary classrooms and a shining example of experiential learning at its best.
“Our teachers go above and beyond to make science meaningful and memorable,” said Gregory Bearup, South Colonie’s STEAM Supervisor. “The chick hatching project is a great example of how classroom learning can spark curiosity in our youngest learners. These types of experiences leave a lasting impression on students and help them connect more deeply with the world around them.”
